Coffee Scientist (Manager, Coffee Development and Excellence)

Role Context

Coffee is set to become a major pillar of Crumble's product development over the coming year. The goal is to build a coffee offering that people can enjoy regularly at a sensible price, while continuing to experiment with new flavors, products, and formats as the company grows.

To achieve this, Crumble is looking for someone who understands coffee and the industry deeply—ideally someone with experience at an established coffee chain. This technical understanding is crucial both for independently developing and improving the product, and for building the standards and training required to reproduce the same high quality across a growing network.

Key Responsibilities

Product Development & Sourcing: Create the best coffee in town at a sensible price, starting with sourcing and working directly with the beans and the roastery.

Equipment Expertise: Develop an in-depth understanding of coffee machines and grinders, knowing them better than the people who sold them.

Barista Training & Standards: Train baristas to a high standard of proficiency so that operations run smoothly independently (e.g., nobody has to call you on a Sunday).

Quality Control & Consistency: Ensure that the coffee tastes exactly the same in every branch, ensuring standardization regardless of external factors like the weather.

Network Scaling: Build the operational standards and training frameworks needed to reproduce quality across a growing network of branches.

Requirements

Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of coffee and the coffee industry.

Experience: Experience at an established coffee chain is highly preferred.

Technical Skills: Strong technical understanding of coffee development, machinery, and quality control processes.
